Tenor-saxophonist Bennie Wallace's second album as a leader, a pianoless date with bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Dannie Richmond, is similar in style to his first. A few years later he would rediscover his Southern roots and add some r&bish rhythms to his music but at this point Wallace's accompaniment was sparse and sometimes bordered on the avant-garde. Live at the Public Theater New York 1980 is a live album by jazz composer, arranger, conductor and pianist Gil Evans recorded in New York in 1980 by Evans with an orchestra featuring Arthur Blythe, Hamiet Bluiett, and Lew Soloff and originally released from Japanese Trio label in two volumes. Integrated version was first released in 1986 from Japanese Crown Record's Break Time label as 2xCDs album, and one track was added in the release from Japanese Venus Records label of 1993. Bennie Wallace began playing jazz in 1959 in a school band under the direction of jazz drummer Chet Hedgecoth. Hedgecoth took the students to hear good jazz bands in the area and once even drove them a hundred miles to hear the Count Basie band. Through Chet, Wallace also discovered the Amvets club, a local black after-hours jazz venue. It was there that he had his first opportunity to sit in and play in a real jazz club.
