This, Irishman Barry Douglas's collaboration with the Tokyo String Quartet of Brahms' Op. 34 piano quintet, is one of those recordings in my collection. There are a lot of reasons not to love it. First, the barely 20-year-old sound is not particularly good. Then, in the concluding four solo pieces, Douglas turns Brahms on his ear and discloses the full measure of the composer. Working from compositions that span Brahms' adult life, Douglas reinforces the introverted, young composer's melancholy in the ballade in B, only to knock you off your chair with the high pressure capriccio in G minor.
