The Cry of the Wild Goose. Spanish Eyes. The Baja Marimba Band was a musical group led by marimba player Julius Wechter. Formed by producer Herb Alpert after his own Tijuana Brass, the Baja Marimba Band outlasted the Tijuana Brass by several years in part due to TV producer Chuck Barris, who included the group's music on his game shows in the 1970s. The band performed in Maxwell House coffee commercials, during the peak of the group's popularity. All three groups lost momentum by the end of the 1960s as the genre faded away. I really enjoyed the album, and consequently became a life long fan of the Baja Marimba Band. Over the years, I bought all their albums. I have dragged out all them at one time or another and my kids and I would play them. When I found this album on line recently, I immediately bought it to download into my computer and play the CD in my car. It is a compilation of the Band's greatest hits, and well worth the purchase price. The Cry of the Wild Goose is a 1950 song written by Terry Gilkyson. Originally performed by Frankie Laine, the song was the third of three consecutive number-one hits for him, following the previous year's hits That Lucky Old Sun and Mule Train. The song was released as a 78 rpm vinyl record in early 1950 by Mercury Records with a catalog number of 5363. The Laine version spent two weeks at number-one on the Billboard Most Played by Jockeys music chart in March 1950.
