There is no doubt that Karl Münchinger's 1964 performance of the St. Matthew Passion, released by Decca in 1965 to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Münchinger's foundation of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, is one of the greatest readings of the work ever recorded. The work of the Stuttgart Hymnus Boy's Choir under its long-time choirmaster, Gerhard Wilhelm is also immaculate.
