Arps 2007 album In Light was one of the first of the current crop, so its interesting to see The Soft Wave moving on, not cashing in. While the album isnt a radical move into skiffle or grindcore, it is definitely an excursion on the version and more interesting because of it. Things do start fairly predictably with Pastoral Symphony or to give it its full title Pastoral Symphony: I. Infinity Room. The treated piano and feedback of Catch Wave brings to mind an analogue Fennesz. Then High Life follows more familiar territory. It still stands out by actually possessing something approaching a tune heresy I know. Arp: The Soft Wave. In a time of home studios and digital media, the resurgence of interest in all things analogue has transcended simple nostalgia. Maybe it's because, with analogue, there's room for subtle variations that are eliminated when dealing with the hard and unalterable facts of digital zeroes and ones there's often something intangibly but discernibly warmer about recordings using analogue gear, recorded to two-inch tape rather than hard disc. New York-based sound sculptor Alexis Georgopoulos knew this when he began Arp, a project that relies on both analogue synths and recording technology. Arp - The Soft Wave Though The Soft Wave is only his second album under the Arp moniker, Alexis Georgopoulos ain't exactly been doing the café wallflower thing in the three years since In Light. Fresh off the composition of his first dance score, Replica, for a Merce Cunningham duet, Georgopoulos has scattered releases around the dance music spectrum, from his Q&A twelve on DFA to a notable Lindstrøm remix and two soundtracks for nonexistent films on Type Records with the Alps. But Georgopoulos reserves his coziest and most contemplative material for his Arp guise
