Whether you thought the Strokes 2001 debut was the second coming or else asked Is this it when it played, Lizzy Goodmans oral history Meet Me in the Bathroom tirelessly documented the debauchery and unfulfilled promise of the New York City rock scene in the early 21st century. But as it mythologized Manhattans dwindling scene, the book somewhat overlooked Brooklyn, the borough that saw its music culture explode over that same time period, becoming the epicenter for indie music the rest of the decade. On Sung Tongs, their first record distributed by FatCat, the two-man Animal Collective come on like sun-scorched acid eaters gathered around the campfire, strumming and grinning while they weave their material out of cyclical singalongs and tight harmonies. Surprisingly, both for fans as well as new additions, that marks a much more accessible sound for a group that had previously probed the outer limits of prog and psychedelia. Album 2004 12 Songs. Despite the name 'Animal Collective' attached to this album, only two of the band's four members play on it: Avey Tare David Portner and Panda Bear Noah Lennox. As a result, Sung Tongs is a more stripped-down affair than other Animal Collective releases. On the album, Portner and Lennox both utilize acoustic guitars and tribal-like drums the electric guitar, an important element in the Collective's previous album, Here Comes the Indian, is absent. Unlike last year's impressive Here Comes the Indian, Sung Tongs opts for folky ambience and late-night, summer camp sing-alongs to carry the weight or weightlessness of its strains. Full Review
