Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place is the fifth studio album by American alternative rock band Anberlin, their second album released through major label Universal Republic, on September 7, 2010. The band recorded the album in Nashville, at Blackbird Studios with Grammy Award-winning producer Brendan O'Brien. The band entered Blackbird Studios, Nashville, to begin recording the album in March 2010. It was announced on March 3 that the band would be working with Grammy Award- winning producer Brendan O. Utilizing the talents of Grammy-winning producer Brendan OBrien, the bands sound has evolved in a way thats manages to be less poppy while sounding decidedly more pop, with the album having a casual slickness to it that makes it sound like something that belongs on the radio rather than an something thats trying to be on the radio. Part of this comes from the band borrowing heavily from U2s playbook. The result is a darker, more refined Anberlin. While, like every album to bear the Anberlin name, the main formula is relatively the same, Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place sees the seemingly insipid side of the band that has always pockmarked their albums with songs like Breathe , Breaking and Adelaide put in the corner in favor of the arena sized ballads that always showcased the best of what. Surprisingly, it is these more atmospheric moments where Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place finds its own voice in waves of Joshua Tree era U2 pedal board infused grandiosity, that even the Edge himself would be proud of. That's largely due to the heart-on-sleeve approach of frontman Stephen Christian, whose lilting, melodic vocals elevate the hard-charging rush of Impossible, while exuding desperation on the ornate, slow-building Take Me As You Found Me. The albums darker moments course with a desperate sense of anguish, as on the noisy guitar-thrasher Depraved or the strident pop-punk highlight To the Wolves, which tells a condemning story of betraya. For a ten track album, Dark Is The Way. indeed still feels a little short, and with one notably inferior track in the mix, it certainly isn't a perfect album. As far as how it measures up to their previous work, it feels fairly obvious that Cities still has yet to be bested, but those who were jaded by New Surrender have the potential to be won back by the rock quintet's latest effort. It's hard to top their career-defining Cities, but Dark is the Way, Light is a Place comes dangerously close to at least matching it as both a mature step forward and a reminder to fans why they fell for this band in the first place. It's fairly apparent throughout the album that Anberlin was definitely in their element, as Dark Is The Way, Light Is A Place is exactly what mainstream music needed: a challenging and engaging rock and roll album anyone can relate to. Their songwriting and musicianship have never been better
