What exactly is a rare groove? First of all there is the element of time. A new release can never be a rare groove. It must have been released somewhere in the past. An amount of time has to have gone by. How much time can't exactly be specified. The phrase is difficult to grasp and mysterious. It contains two words, rare and groove. Let's start with rare. Synonyms amongst others are, precious, uncommon, only a few. Basically one can say there must be not a lot of them around. But how to know this? There can be several reasons why an item is or has become rare. The most common reason is, after the item was released, it didn't sell or hardly has been sold. Another can be that the item was made but it was decided that it had to be withdrawn or even destroyed. Possibly a few of them survived making it consequently very rare. Only the rarity of it doesn't make a song a rare groove. It misses another element. It must be sought after by a certain group of people. This is the mysterious part of it. Who are seeking it? Collectors, music producers, DJs, music lovers? The group of people is difficult to grasp. They operate independently of each other. Where is the notion formed that a particular song is a rare groove? A certain in-crowd might decide it's a rare groove. One individual can say, this is a rare groove, but many others must confirm it really is. This is where discogs steps in, with owners and want list. Is the want list high and on the other hand there are only a few owners, one generally can say, yes, this must be a rare groove. Looking at the amount of items for sale also helps and the price for which it actually was sold is also important. Please be careful, maybe not the price a seller asks for it. That could be a wannabe rare groove. It has to be confirmed by the mysterious in-crowd. The higher the want list and fewer the owners, the rarer it gets. I almost forgot the second word. Groove. Where does it refer to? There are two possibilities. Groove in the meaning of funky, groovy and danceable and secondly the grooves of the record itself, the grooves where the stylus runs through. Primarily its the genre and style which defines groove. Mostly fanatic Funk, Soul, Disco and Boogie collectors are on the lookout for these rare records. But on the other hand, are records which do not belong to these styles a rare groove? Let's say for instance Rock, or maybe Salsa? Could these records be a rare groove? I think it could be so. Each and every record which is rare and sought after by a particular group of people is a rare groove. Well, there you have it. My definition of rare groove. I wrote this because i was not satisfied with what i found on the internet concerning rare grooves. Now i only need to resize it to a few sentences.
