Happy Birthday is the debut album by the British new wave band Altered Images. Released in 1981, the album's title track, Happy Birthday, became the band's biggest hit, peaking at number 2 in the UK in October of that year. The album reached number 26 in the UK Album Chart and was certified Silver by the BPI for sales in excess of 60,000 copies. Originally released on vinyl album and cassette in 1981, the album was reissued on CD several times in the 1990s as straight album reissues, and then in. The album Happy Birthday bears little resemblance to the cute and bubbly new wave pop of the title track, for which they're best remembered. Instead of capitalizing on the brightness of the obvious hit single, producer Steven Severin of Siouxsie & the Banshees pushed the band into moodier post-punk territory with minimalist arrangements and simple, driving rhythms. Clair Grogan's little-girl voice was probably better suited to pop, but the combination of the two extremes is certainly interesting, if not as fun and engaging as Happy Birthday. I had only heard a few tracks by Altered Images before buying this CD. Happy BirthdayI could be happy is on several various artists compilations I have but the other 34 tracks were largely a mystery to me. So I wondered whether this might be a 2CD set that I would only listen to CD1. That's not the case with this compilation. Best of album with all the best hits and more well worth the purchase.
