Known primarily for his short piece Midsummer Rhapsody Alfven also composed a great deal of worthy music including five symphonies and the ballet suite Prodigal Son included on this release. I've heard recordings of the 3rd, 4th and 5th on this label also conducted by Willen who has passion for this music and brings to it a high level of nuance and forward motion where some other conductors tend to let the energy and your interest lapse. I checked this CD out after reading a review that suggested Alfven's Second Symphony was his masterpiece. The Prodigal Son, or Le Fils prodigue, Op. 46 Russian: Блудный сын is a ballet created for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes by George Balanchine to music by Sergei Prokofiev 192829. The libretto, based on the parable in the Gospel of Luke, was by Boris Kochno, who added a good deal of drama and emphasized the theme of sin and redemption ending with the Prodigal Son's return.
