Laurence Equilbey & Accentus. 4 Songs, 47 Minutes. For nearly 20 minutes the choirs Accentus is augmented by the Lativian Radio Choir sing an unaccompanied line that has its fill of harmonic wiggling and some flat-out gorgeous melodies. It certainly reminds me of the symphonic Strauss. Accentus acquits itself quite well. Tonal quality and blend are near-ideal and the fact that they stay in pitch in the Deutsche Motette is quite a feat in itself. These are well-sung performances but there are some issues that keep this from being a revelation. I find an emotional coolness in these performances that drops things below the usual standard Ive. 62, for a cappella chorus. Because of the work's staggering demands - its tone is ecstatic, its language chromatic, and its duration 20 minutes - only the best choruses record it, and most, amazingly enough, succeed in delivering impressive performances. So it is here on this Naïve Classique disc Strauss A Cappella, with the Latvian Radio Choir led by Laurence Equilbey. Coupled with Traumlicht, Op. 1232, and Zwei Gesänge, Op. Album 2009 4 Songs. Richard Strauss, though better known as a composer of operas and tone poems, wrote significantly in other genres as well. One of those mediums that fascinated him throughout his entire life was the a cappella choral work. The earliest pieces recorded here-the Zwei Gesange - come from 1897, the year of Ein Heldenleben the latest piece-Traumlicht, the second of the Drei Mannerchore - from 1935-36, those years in which Strauss was occupied with the operas Friedenstag and Daphne.
